Volvo Ocean Race Legends Honour

Inmarsat will celebrate its heritage in maritime safety and 30-year long history with the Volvo/Whitbread Round the World Race by honouring the contribution, courage and commitment of the pioneering photographers on the original races.

The Inmarsat Media Pioneer Award will be presented at the Volvo Ocean Race Legends Prize giving on Thursday 3rd November in Alicante, Spain by Chris McLaughlin, Vice President, External Affairs, Inmarsat.

Inmarsat’s satellite technology is a key enabler for all aspects of the 2011-12 race – for position reporting, sending live video footage or photos of on-board action to the world’s media, providing safety communications in the event of an accident, and for boosting crew morale.

Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband service has taken media coverage of the race into a whole new era. Faster transmission speeds delivering better quality live broadcasts.

Volvo Ocean Race Legends will be the first reunion of veterans from this 38-year old race.

In recognition of the vital role of recording and reporting life onboard has always played in driving awareness and the excitement of the race to fans, the media and sponsors, Inmarsat is honouring an outstanding media pioneer, who, in his own modest way began the task that has now developed into a full time onboard media crew member role.

Says Chris McLaughlin: “This award acknowledges the invaluable role reportage plays in the history of this race and recognises Inmarsat’s 30-year history with the race and our heritage in maritime safety. In the last race, 2008-09, FleetBroadband delivered a flawless service.”

Inmarsat is also sponsoring the Media Crew Member (MCM) Award of 1,000 Euros (US$1,358) on each leg of the race, plus a 10,000 Euro (US$13,585) prize for the best overall contribution to race coverage.

This race each Volvo Open 70 race boat will be fitted with a FleetBroadband 500 terminal, delivering voice and high-speed data communications. Competitors in the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 will be the first sailors with access to the new ‘red button’ safety service on FleetBroadband, giving instant one-touch contact with maritime rescue coordination centres. Also onboard will be a compact FleetBroadband 150 for crew voice calling and IP data, two Mini-C systems for constant positioning data and additional global safety communications. In addition, the race is endorsing IsatPhone Pro, Inmarsat’s new global satellite phone, by including it in the boats’ safety kits.

Amazon’s latest ebook reader is the talk of the town – not because of any new or superlative hardware features, but because the Kindle Cloud Reader replicates many of the functions of its standalone brother in the form of a HTML5 web app. The web app functions as a browser-based ebook reader, letting users access their Amazon accounts, download and read their ebooks.

The hot topic of tech industry conversations these days is HTML5. While HTML5 is far from being a fully-adopted standard, it holds great promise: to deliver rich content across any platform or device, and to convert any website into a fully-functioning web app. This ability is revolutionary, marrying the utility of an app with the ease of access of the web. This will particularly alter the mobile experience, since it extends the utility of mobile browsers, without the need to purchase additional apps.

SINGAPORE–May 18, 2011–Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR), the technology performance company, today announced that it has worked with the Page Speed team to make it easier for organizations to optimize website performance. The Compuware Gomez platform® is now integrated with Page Speed, an open source project started at Google, to give developers and organizations actionable insight and recommendations on how to speed up web application performance.

Studies have shown that improving website performance can lead to increased revenues and reduced operating costs. This integration, the first in which a commercial application performance management (APM) product has integrated with Page Speed, is a part of the Gomez Platform 2011 Spring Release that was announced earlier today.

Page Speed is an open-source project started at Google to help developers optimize their web pages by applying web performance best practices. Page Speed started as an open-source browser extension, and it is now deployed in third-party products such as Compuware’s Gomez platform. Page Speed assesses the performance of a web page against a set of rules, providing scores and recommendations for improvement. This allows developers and organizations to optimize their web pages based on industry best-practices.

“We’ve found that speed is one of the most important factors for improving the user experience on the web,” said Richard Rabbat, Product Manager for Page Speed at Google. “Page Speed is one of many efforts we’ve released over the past few years in an effort to empower developers, site owners and webmasters to help make the web faster.”

The Gomez platform is the only commercially available APM product to integrate with Page Speed. The integration allows Gomez users to utilize the Google technology to improve their website performance. As Gomez users run transactions against their web pages, Page Speed analyzes web page content and generates ranked suggestions to make the pages faster. This allows developers to optimize web pages based on web performance best practices.

“Making the web faster is a mutual goal Compuware shares with Google,” said Bruce Reading, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Compuware’s APM business unit. “We’re excited about the kind of benefits this will deliver to our users.”

The Gomez platform is the industry’s leading solution for optimizing the performance of web, non-web, mobile, streaming and cloud applications.
