With a customer base that remains receptive to new mobile technology as well as mobile marketing messages, APAC has hosted some of the most outstanding campaigns in the mobile industry. Apart from Asia Pacific, the Annual Awards see representation from North America, Central & Latin America, Europe, Africa and Middle East.

Tens of millions of people are now aware of the staggering 15 billion pounds (6.8 billion kg) of rubbish dumped in the world’s oceans each year thanks to a pioneering environmental mission, the Plastiki Expedition.

21 July 2010 – Tens of millions of people are now aware of the staggering 15 billion pounds (6.8 billion kg) of rubbish dumped in the world’s oceans each year thanks to a pioneering environmental mission, the Plastiki Expedition. Led by adventurer and environmentalist David de Rothschild, the ocean-crossing expedition relied solely on the clarity, quality and reliability of Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband service to spread its important message to a global audience.

Plastiki, a 20-metre catamaran that uses 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles in its hull, is on course to arrive in Sydney this weekend. Using Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband, de Rothschild and his crew have been able to keep the expedition firmly in the public eye and raise a debate on finding ways to beat waste, in particular the colossal amounts of plastic in our oceans.

Since its departure from San Francisco on March 20, 2010, over 50 media interviews have been conducted, resulting in more than 300 print articles, 200 radio and TV broadcasts and 1,000 mentions on websites. There are over 800,000 search terms relating to Plastiki and 52,200 related images on Google.

Celebrating the eco boat’s arrival, the New South Wales State Government has declared a state event. When the boat reaches its final destination it will have sailed over 7,500 nautical miles, or about 13,000 kilometres over more than 120 days.

De Rothschild said the journey had succeeded in attracting a worldwide audience. Over a million people have followed the vessel’s progress via www.theplastiki.com, and over 7,000 people are following on Facebook.

Said de Rothschild: “Every day we have thousands of people simultaneously responding online, it’s amazing to see this growing community.”

A lasting legacy of the Plastiki will be its capacity to shift public thinking and perception from plastic as the enemy to plastic becoming part of the solution. To solve the plastic pollution and waste issues at large will require a re-think of how we currently use, reuse and ultimately dispose of plastics and waste products.

According to Andrew Sukawaty, Chairman and CEO of Inmarsat, the FleetBroadband services helped Plastiki capture the imagination of the general public.

Said Sukawaty: “Plastiki has created an increasingly large and loyal following around the globe. We’re delighted that our flagship service, FleetBroadband, can help effect change. As David so rightly says, the impact of our plastic waste is undeniable.”

Commenting on the global reach of this vital environmental message, de Rothschild said: “One of the founding principles of the Plastiki Expedition was to create a global conversation around the issues and the solutions needed in order to beat waste, especially the plastic pollution that plagues our oceans. Without Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband service, unwavering commitment and vision to support our call to action, the Plastiki wouldn’t have been able to reach the global audience it has, and in turn create such an immense global voice of change.”

As well as reaching over six million viewers through a single interview on the Oprah Winfrey Show, regular video reports were transmitted from the boat for weekly TV and web reports on CNN International. De Rothschild conducted many phone interviews over FleetBroadband, including one with the website Smartplanet in which he said: “Because we have all this connectivity, it allows us to be ambitious with the messages we send and the kind of content we are posting.”

The high-quality voice and broadband data connectivity of Inmarsat’s maritime service, FleetBroadband, has guaranteed that Plastiki has been the most connected environmental messenger on today’s oceans. During the 120 day plus voyage FleetBroadband has provided essential 24/7 connectivity and sent high-definition television (HDTV) and rich multimedia content from Plastiki to the world’s media in a bid to reach the largest global audience with this environmental message.

The boat is completely self-contained in terms of its energy generation. A SAILOR FleetBroadband 500 (FB500) was supplied by solutions provider Satcom to send store-and-forward video from the boat back to the project website and to media. The video production equipment was supplied by Livewire Digital, airtime by Stratos Global and the Inmarsat C safety service by Thrane & Thrane.

The Plastiki Expedition has benefited from the 432kbps of standard IP connectivity, and up to 256kbps of guaranteed or ‘streaming’ IP data.

In addition to creating a media event, it was, according to Plastiki skipper Jo Royle, hugely reassuring for the crew to know that with FleetBroadband they were never alone, and that their progress and news was reaching not only the media, sponsors and a global audience but also their own friends and families.

                                                                                ###

Notes to Editors

Additional quotes

Skipper Jo Royle: “The expedition would have had a totally different meaning without the support of Inmarsat. Without it, there is no way we would have had so many hits to our website and built such an incredible community of people following us and engaging in live discussions about the health of our oceans and how we see a smarter future.”

Skipper Jo Royle: “The Sailor FB500 and Stratos as the air time service provider for the Plastiki expedition have been 100 per cent reliable. I have never experienced such clarity in ship-to-shore communications. Inmarsat technology has totally revolutionised my job as an ocean sailor skipper. We can now enjoy life at sea and remain connected with developments on shore. As technology across all aspects of professional life at sea continues to push boundaries, connectivity between ship and shore side teams is increasingly important.”

News Facts

Ellis Medicine, the only provider of acute hospital care in New York’s Schenectady County, has deployed CommVault® Simpana® software and McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) to lower compliance risk, respond more quickly to regulatory changes and increase productivity by safeguarding electronic medical records and other critical patient data.

According to a study conducted by HealthGrades, a leading national healthcare ratings company, Ellis Medicine is the only hospital in the state and one of only 76 nationwide to be ranked among the top five percent of U.S. hospitals for patient safety and clinical excellence. To that end, Ellis Medicine is committed to best practices in electronic medical record retention, HIPAA compliance and end-to-end data management.

In an effort to curb costs needed to improve operational efficiency and ensure high levels of patient care at the hospital, Ellis Medicine replaced multiple disparate backup and recovery solutions, including Tivoli Storage Manager and Symantec Backup Exec, with Simpana software’s Backup and Recovery and Archive modules. By leveraging Simpana software’s Singular Information Management® approach, the organization now reports reduced risk and email storage costs of up to 75 percent lower than with its previous solutions.

According to Ellis Medicine, Simpana software’s integration with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) has provided unparalleled enterprise-wide visibility to the status of backed up and archived critical patient and application data. As a result, the organization can better correlate data management and security to further reduce costs and administrative overhead while improving threat protection and overall compliance.

Building on a strategic partnership between the two companies, unique integration between CommVault Simpana software and McAfee ePO enables administrators to have more information at their fingertips — leading to faster and more concise decision making regarding security, data integrity and protection, as well as compliance status — all critical business disciplines.

Seamless Integration with McAfee ePO Improves Patient Data Integrity

According to Ellis Medicine, the customized ePO dashboard offers color-coded status screens and “at-a-glance” information, which helps a small team quickly identify potential risks before data integrity is compromised.

Automated reporting and email alerts also reduce operational costs and boost management efficiencies by facilitating up-to-the-minute access to all data management activities spanning backup, recovery and archive operations.

The organization also reports expedited recoveries by easily switching from the customized ePO dashboard to the Simpana software console to accelerate other functions, such as restoring a single email from the Simpana software Archive for Microsoft Exchange.

Ellis Medicine plans to take advantage of extended data management capabilities, including Simpana software’s Replication module, to elevate disaster recovery while Simpana software’s Search module could prove useful in offering streamlined access to electronically stored information (ESI) for improved productivity and further reduced risk.

A six-person team of network engineers oversees 200 physical and virtual servers as well as 27 TBs of backups comprising critical clinical data, 1,500 email boxes and specialized healthcare applications built using Oracle, SQL and Sybase databases.

Supporting Quotes

From Rodney Kowalczyk, network engineer for Ellis Medicine:

“The ability to take security management beyond the endpoint to encompass data management and network protection is huge.”

“We really appreciate having color-coded status checks easily visible on the combined dashboard. We can assess status from across the room. We have a lot of confidence that we know what’s going on at any time. Single console management of Simpana software and McAfee using ePO has helped us become very efficient.”

“We trust CommVault Simpana software to bring our data back. It’s a great feeling to know that McAfee keeps everything secure while CommVault keeps everything safe. The fact that the platforms integrate so well together is a complete win-win.”

From Mark McGill, senior network engineer for Ellis Medicine:

“CommVault’s Archive for Exchange is really helping us with our compliance demands. We grab the Exchange journal twice a day and offload the data seamlessly to our EMC SAN.”

“We’ve been able to shrink email box sizes from 4 GBs to a more manageable 500 MBs, while reducing storage costs by up to 75 percent by moving older emails off high-cost RAID 10 disk onto more economical SATA storage.”

“We chose CommVault and McAfee because they are two leaders in their respective fields and to have them integrate their offerings is icing on the cake.”

IQstream Adaptive Content Optimization for the RAN Helps Mobile Operators Improve Service Delivery Economics and Enhance Subscribers’ Multimedia Experience

SINGAPORE, July 13, 2010 – Sycamore Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCMR), a leader in intelligent bandwidth management solutions for fixed line and mobile network operators worldwide, today announced the introduction of IQstreamTM, a unique answer to the service challenges posed by rapid mobile data growth in the Radio Access Network (RAN). The Sycamore IQstream mobile broadband optimization solution helps operators ensure a superior multimedia experience for their subscribers by dramatically reducing congestion in the access network caused by rising demand for Internet video and other rich media applications. At the same time, IQstream significantly lowers the cost of delivering mobile broadband services by freeing up capacity in the cost-sensitive RAN.

Powered by Adaptive Content OptimizationTM technology and advanced learning algorithms, the IQstream solution dynamically adapts to mobile data traffic patterns, including peak usage periods and flash events. This allows operators to cost-efficiently meet growing subscriber expectations for a high quality multimedia experience while alleviating capacity constraints in a high-cost part of their network. As a result, operators can significantly reduce operational expenses, defer costly network upgrades, and dramatically improve the economics of their mobile data offerings.

“IQstream is an innovative new initiative from Sycamore that builds upon the company’s heritage of solving complex networking problems with adaptive, real-time service intelligence,” said Daniel E. Smith, president and chief executive officer, Sycamore Networks. “IQstream leverages Sycamore’s proven networking expertise and long-standing relationships with mobile operators worldwide to address the critical challenge of RAN congestion and the attendant implications for subscriber quality of experience, service profitability, and backhaul capacity planning.”

Key benefits of the IQstream solution include:

Superior delivery of rich media content, particularly high quality video in the RAN

Improved quality of experience for subscribers during peak usage periods

Optimal utilization of existing network infrastructure

Enhanced ability to serve large numbers of subscribers simultaneously accessing popular broadband content

Simplified mobile broadband network planning and backhaul dimensioning

“The explosion of rich media content such as Internet video is creating massive congestion issues in mobile networks. This trend will only accelerate as end-user devices become increasingly more powerful and more and more subscribers consume new bandwidth-intensive applications,” said Kevin Oye, vice president of systems and technology, Sycamore Networks. “IQstream takes a unique approach to optimizing video and other rich media content traversing the RAN, employing sophisticated adaptive algorithms that self-tune in response to dynamic traffic behavior to ensure consistent service performance as mobile broadband usage patterns, applications, and devices evolve.”

IQstream can be easily and selectively deployed at network congestion hot spots for rapid improvements in service performance and immediate operational savings. Unlike core-based optimization schemes, Sycamore’s patent-pending optimization technology directly improves utilization of existing HSPA RAN infrastructure while maintaining full transparency to 3GPP radio network protocols and operations including critical core-based functions such as billing, policy control, and lawful intercept.

IQstream will be generally available in Q4 2010.
