VIRTUAL reality is one of the enduring images of science fiction: Think of epic action-hero battles, complete with martial arts moves and superhuman agility, or holograms that transport the human protagonists to another time and place.

At a time when technology is changing nearly every aspect of how we live our lives and redefining the ways in which we interact with one another, the time is ripe for virtual reality to make the leap from the imagined to the actual.

While the more extreme elements of those fantasies may remain out of reach, the underlying virtual reality has quietly materialised but not merely as a way to enhance entertainment …
